Thursday's Thoughts 03/06/2008

Hello Fairview! I have last evening’s presentation ruminating in my thoughts today.  I feel sorry that those of you who were not with us missed Steve Spanier’s extremely powerful presentation on Ethical Consumption.  This was actually the third time I had seen a version of his presentation and yet the amazing thing is each time I see it I learn something new.  As I expressed in the Innovator this month, one thing that this Lent has done for me is increase my awareness.  I realize that on so many fronts, I’m really very ignorant –and now as I engage in the practice of awareness that we’ve been consciously participating in through our Green Lenten Project –I find that the choices I make (even when I don’t realize there is a choice!) have a very large impact on myself and the world.  We watched two short films last night that focused on the cycle of consumerism and the “Real Cost” of what we purchase, including what we eat.  Jack Morrison wondered how it was that he found a shirt for $2 and couldn’t imagine that his two dollars would pay for the actual cost of what made that shirt.  He was right –it did cost a whole lot more than two bucks. As we learned in the film – the real cost is not what we pay to barter for the item we’re receiving – so much more went into the production of that shirt, its delivery to the store Jack saw it in, and all that it took to get it in his hands –the real cost was remarkably more than the price on the tag.   We learned about the cycle we inadvertently buy into (literally buy into) and how we might begin to engage in a paradigm switch that will not only benefit the world, but will also have real benefits for us.   I honestly wish that each and every one of you would have been able to be present last evening, but I have faith that those that did hear will begin to enact changes in their lives, and share what they learned with others.   I’d like to thank the Missions Commission and the Adult Christian Education Commission for joining forces on this and really giving us insight into how we can educate ourselves to Go Green for Lent –and who knows …maybe we’ll incorporate this into our lives –Go Green for Life!

We continue along the Lenten Journey, only a few weeks before we reach Easter morning.  As we approach the resurrection, we are given a taste of what is to come, in the lectionary readings this week.  We’ll be reading from Ezekiel about them dry bones!  Lately, even at my young age (or as Wayne would say –my tender years) I feel like me bones are get’n old.  How many of us are feeling a little worn down and in need of new life?  Well, drag them bones out this Sunday  --but drag ‘em out a little earlier because it is time to spring forward.  Move your clocks an hour ahead of time on Saturday night so you won’t be late on Sunday!  Come and listen!

There’s lots going on at Fairview –be sure to scroll down to announcements to see how you might get more involved!  See you on Sunday!

The Wide, Wide World of Theology!

                                        Lazarus

How he died
he could not
remember

or why he
died he could
not tell

or whether he
had chosen
death or just
fell into
accepting it
he could not say

he only knew
that a darkness
filled his eyes
which closed
them to light

preferring the
silence of tombs
and the bindings
of cotton bands

till the voice
of his friend
called to him
again—to life

out of the darkness
of certitude
back to the
colors of mystery

Why we are here, we know not.

How we got here, we can’t remember.

But somewhere along the line, our bones dried up,

And we sat down in the comfort of silent tomb.

Preferring the darkness of death, instead of the light of life

Call us to life again.

Breath your spirit into us.

Open our eyes to your colorful creation.

Amen.
