Thursday's Thoughts 03/20/2008

Blessings this Holy Week! Today is Maundy Thursday, some say the most solemn day of the year, preceded only by tomorrow’s observation of Good Friday.  Tonight we remember Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and his closest of friends.  The last supper is the event that marks one of the holiest sacraments of the Christian tradition and has been a subject of the artists’ imagination throughout the centuries.   Join us this evening as we gather around the table again.  The twelve around the table will read through the Passion narratives in Matthew, Mark and Luke walking us through Jesus’ final hours: the foot washing, the farewell meal, the betrayal, the mockery, and the cross.  This somber experience pulls us back into antiquity and brings Jesus’ journey alive for us today.   The service this evening is called “Tenebrae” –it is a service of shadows.  Each reading takes us deeper into the night closer to the cross, and as the light of day fades into darkness, so too does the table. One by one the disciples disappear until only the cross is left.  And finally…even that is taken away.   Do not miss this holy night.

Tomorrow is Good Friday.  Ironically, Good Friday isn’t good at all. We observe the day Jesus was brutally killed on the cross for daring to believe that God’s realm is open for all people. He shared God to the world, and he died doing it.   We shall participate in an ecumenical Good Friday service as we walk the Via Rosa, journeying through the stations of the cross.  This ecumenical service of Lutherans, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, UCCers, Baptists, and Disciples of Christ will take place at noon at the new site of St Mark Presbyterian Church on Macarthur Blvd in Newport Beach.  This, too, shall undoubtedly prove to be a moving experience.

After we have trudged the path of the final days of the life of Jesus, after we have sat at table with him, and stood at the cross with tears streaming down our face, after we have said our goodbyes.  Then we join together Sunday morning to see what miracles the day has brought us!   Let us join together Easter morn to celebrate Jesus!   Join us for an Alleluia morning as we rejoice in resurrection and find that life can come from death!

If you feel so inclined, please help us to decorate our sanctuary by bringing Easter lilies and fresh cut flowers to church on Easter Sunday.  There will be a kids Easter Egg hunt on Easter Sunday so be sure to invite children to church to join in the festivities!

Let us continue our Lenten Journey together as we continue into the final days of this Holy Week.   Peace be with you.

The Wide, Wide World of Theology!

I have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet.

Jesus rose from the table, took off his outer garments,
and tied a towel around his waist.
He poured water into a basin
and began to wash
his disciples’
feet.

Teacher,
help us learn

how the infinite, all-powerful God
in his inexhaustible love
has became a
slave.

Let us wash, like you, our neighbors' feet
and become their
food and
drink

Jesus,

Holy man who walked before us, you who call us onward.

How did you walk down this journey?

We’re scared.  We’re cowardly.  We’re empty.

And yet you keep calling.

Calling us by name, calling us to the cross.

Can we sit at your table?

Can we carry the heavy cross?

Walk with us again.

Help us to get to Easter morn.

It is our love which gives us the strength to pray,

Amen.
