Thursday's Thoughts 04/03/2008

Hi Friends!
Last night’s Divine on the Vine was so fun and intellectually stimulating I’m still reveling it right now!  We celebrated Marti Barmore’s birthday – Gary had gone all out with champagne flutes that looked like scepters and decadent chocolate cake and the fruit of vine was truly divine last night!  There was laughter and eating, great discussion, deep meditation on scripture, and lots of fellowship!   If you haven’t made it to our Bible study before, why not mark next week’s gathering on your calendar and join us?

We’re in the second week of Easter and I have to say that for me the flowers have come to life, the skies seem bluer, and the world is new again!   On my day off on Monday, I took some time to simply relax and for me that usually means catching up on sleep and personal chores, but this time I took the opportunity to walk and open myself up to the beauty of nature. I strolled over to Back Bay and walked along the water.  The wild flowers were bright yellow, purples, pinks and crisp whites and everything else seemed so green with life!   After my morning walk I went to lunch on the Balboa pier and watched the sunlight dance upon the waves!    Surely, the new life of Easter is all around us!   God’s creation is ever more striking, especially when we take the time to breathe it in!

I know I’m not always the best at stopping to smell the roses.  Although, our dear clerk Wayne makes it easier and easier for me to do so!  But I am convinced that there is a component of the spiritual life that urges us to be still, quiet, open and present to our God.  Sometimes we get so caught up doing church that we forget to be.  I wonder how many of us forget to be.  Over the last few weeks I’ve preached about “Breath.”   This past Sunday we read from the Gospel of Matthew about Jesus breathing on the disciples.  As we worshipped together we breathed in deep breaths, reminding ourselves of the breath of God, the divine breath of Jesus, the Ruach –Spirit that is always available for us.  So, as I struggle to pause, to breathe, to appreciate God’s creation, I ask you to do the same.  How about you stop what you’re doing right now, and take a deep breath in?  Take this moment and make it holy.  Breathe in the divine, and allow yourself an opportunity to simply be.  Close your eyes, breathe in, and let the breath of God wash over you.  Your computer will still be here when you open your eyes again, but maybe you’ll feel a little less stressed.

Now, read the prayers below, allow yourself this 2 minute spiritual break, and when you’re done scroll down to see all of the exciting things happening at Fairview in the next few weeks!

The Wide, Wide World of Theology!

Splattering the black-blue night
with the twinkling stars
and spinning fluffy clouds
out of the fabric of your hope,
you raised creation out of chaos,
Gracious God,
giving life and calling it good.

Walking with disciples
down grief's lonely road,
you sang of how
God had raised you from the dead,
so that listening,
they might believe;
believing,
they might understand;
understanding,
they might obey:
going forth to invite all
to follow you,
Bread of Life,
to feast on your love forever.

Reaching out your love to us,
so we would touch others;
filling us with your gifts,
so we could be a blessing to the world;
piercing our darkness with hope,
so we might bring healing
to the broken:
you raise us to new life,
Spirit of God.

When silence was caught
in the traps of chaos,
you spoke a Word,
Heart of Hope,
and the rivers sang
sonnets of joy,
the stars rang with laughter,
and the valleys echoed
the choruses of all creation.
Made in the image of your love,
you considered us more valuable
that the finest jewels and metals.
You cupped your ear
to listen to our praises,
but heard only our complaints,
as we foolishly interpreted
the stories sin and death told us
as being the truth we should follow.
You longed to open our eyes,
but we were blinded by disobedience.
Your heart broken,
you sent Jesus to come to us,
to lead us back to you.

Therefore, we join our hearts and voices
with those right next to us, and those far way,
of every time, and from every place,
who sing forever your praises and glory:
