Thurday's Thoughts 7/10/08

Hello Fairview and Friends!
I have missed you so! My three weeks in Chicago in the ACTS Doctorate of Ministry program were wonderful weeks of learning, growing, dreaming
and revitalizing!   I gathered with clergy from around the world – Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and all throughout the United States! We came from a diverse ecumenical background –Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal/Anglican, Catholic, United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, and Lutheran. It was such a powerful experience to get to interact with other clergy who have similar life-experiences, challenges, joys, fears, loves and passion for preaching!   I think this program will prove to be invaluable for both my personal preaching voice, and our own church growth.   I am thrilled to share with you all I have learned, the Bible Study group already got a taste of some of it!

While I was gone you all kept the energy up! Sounds like the early 4th of July BBQ was fun! I heard lots of great comments about the guest preachers. Thank you all for hosting the neutral pulpits these last two weeks. This was a generous gift to our conference and sister church as they discern who they’re new pastor will be!

One of the most exciting things that happened while I was gone, happened last Thursday, July 3rd at about 6:20pm: Trevor Michael Lyons was born to the proud parents Leah and Mike! He’s an adorable baby with a FULL head of hair! Trevor’s been the most well behaved baby and his parents are knocking on wood that his good manners of sleeping through the night will last!

If we’re lucky, we might all get to meet Baby Trevor this Sunday! Now
that’s a good reason to come to church!   See you soon!

If a healthy soil is full of death, it is also full of life: worms, fungi, microorganisms of all kinds ...
Given only the health of the soil, nothing that dies is dead for very long.

Lord,
we know all about thorns and rocky ground.
Show us please the rich soil
that gives lush
fruit.

What is rich soil for the soul?

If it includes listening, please open our ears.
If understanding, open our minds.
If it is loving actions,
give us heart.

Let your Word bear
lavish fruit
through
us.
