The Newest Congregation of the United Church of Christ (11/6/2006)

Hooray! Fairview Community Church is the newest member of the United Church of Christ. On Sunday November 5th at a meeting of the Southern Association of the Southern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ at Irvine United Congregational Church, Fairview was unanimously and joyfully voted in as part of the United Church of Christ.

What does that mean for Fairview? Well, Fairview has always been a freethinking church. In fact, that’s how they found the UCC to begin with. So the ability to think openly has always been a Fairview value, and its also a UCC value. Now that we’re UCC we have the ability to reach out to our brothers and sisters in the United Church of Christ as well as our sisters and brothers in the American Baptist Church and share resources. The UCC has long been a congregation that stands up for social justice –perfect for Fairview –because that’s what we do too! Now we have the opportunity to join forces to work for justice and peace, to share in resources and to be a part of a denomination that supports our voice!

In some ways things won’t change much at all –as I mentioned, Fairview has always been a justice church. In other ways, hopefully we’ll be able to learn from our sister churches in the UCC. We’ll be able to make an impact within our denomination as well! And we’ll be able to identify ourselves within our community as a church that believes that God continues to speak to us today, calling us into the future –to realize God’s realm on earth!

We’re so excited about our new denomination! It’s great to be in the UCC! I will commit to being a strong pastor in the United Church of Christ and in the American Bapstist Church. As a congregation of two denominations we have twice as many opportunities to build relationships, to participate in transformation, and to learn!

It’s great to be Fairview Community Church a proud congregation of the United Church of Christ and the American Baptist Church! Tell us why you think it’s great to be in the UCC or the ABC!
