Thursday’s Thoughts
Fairview Community Church
Worshiping God and Welcoming All Every Sunday at 10am
Life is Busy!
I don’t know what my life would be like if it were not busy! Quite often I am wishing for things to slow down, but then again, I don’t know if I would have any idea of what to do with myself if I were not running around getting things done! So, I thank God for the busyness of life! It truly has been a jam packed week this week and I am crossing my fingers that I will make it through the next couple of days –but I know that I always do and I am always grateful afterwards that I had the opportunity to experience as much as I did. So, I am counting my blessings from all of last week’s beautiful craziness and am confident that I will enjoy every minute of this week’s activities as well!
Last week’s Pentecost celebration and observance of Kids’ Sunday was SO much fun! We missed Miss Frenacee very much as she focuses on caring for her injured foot. It wasn’t quite the same without her –but it was still SUPER FUN! If you didn’t know what Pentecost was about before –hopefully after the interactive sermon on Sunday you now do! With red party blowers represented the wind, and the fire wands we made representing the flames, along with the doves of the Spirit and of course everyone speaking in different languages! How fun it was to wave the fire wands and blow the wind of the Spirit! By the end we all learned that we speak the same language – the language of Love! Many thanks to Myrna Pappas who helped me plan the entire service and stayed up into the wee hours of the morning making kite frames! Likewise –much gratitude should be given to Betsy Zafuto who transformed the sanctuary from its Easter décor to the fiery red of Pentecost! I loved the drama of the red flame bursting out from the cross!
Tonight I will be joining our band and hundreds of other people as we gather together for an Interfaith Service: Telling Our Stories as we celebrate marriage and uplift equal marriage. I hope that you will join us at University Synagogue in Irvine this evening at 7pm for this inspiring service! We would love to have a strong Fairview presence!
This weekend Myrna Pappas , Marti Barmore and I are representing Fairview Community Church at the Southern California Nevada Conference of the UCC Annual Gathering. As delegates we will be voting on resolutions, taking care of the business of the larger church, and most importantly enjoying worship and fellowship time with our friends (new and old) from other United Church of Christ churches. I always love the creative worship services that are shared during Annual Gathering. I also love seeing all of the diversity within our church –I always love it when our Samoan churches share their traditions with us. It is so heartening knowing that we are a part of a diverse church, even when our own churches do not always reflect that diversity. Speaking of our denominations – in just a few weeks the American Baptist Biennial Convention will be held here in Pasadena ! If you’ve read the Innovator you know that we’re looking for volunteers to help host a party on Friday June 26th. If you’re interested please let me know or contact Myrna Pappas directly so that you can be a part of this wonderful opportunity!
This week we are going to participate in BAREFOOT SUNDAY! This is a national event where we “Take Off Our Shoes” and donate them to people who do not have any. Our very shoes will be given to people around the world who desperately need the protection and support a shoe can provide.A sad fact is that there are 300 million children in the world who have never owned a pair of shoes, while the same number of shoes were tossed into American landfills last year. We want to give people a reason to clean out their closets and help needy people while reducing the strain on our landfills at the same time. So- check your closets and see what shoes you can give away, or maybe stop into a shop and pick up some new tennies to give away! Let’s all get into the spirit and go barefoot so we can bring some SOLES for SOULS!
We’ll see you soon!
