Thursday’s Thoughts

Fairview Community Church

Worshiping God and Welcoming All Every Sunday at 10am

SHOES! SHOES! SHOES!

Hiya Fairview! – What an incredible worship we shared together last Sunday!  I had no idea that Barefoot Sunday would be so well received!  When we sang out Take Off Your Shoes you all really took off your shoes!  It was so joyful watching you come to the altar shedding your shoes, and even unloading bags of them!  We certainly responded with generosity this last Sunday!  Together we imagined where the shoes that we moments before had on our feet would be and whose feet would soon be wearing them.  They could go to a woman who suffered from domestic abuse here in our own community, or to a child in the Appalachian mountains .  They might end up on man’s feet in South America, or a village woman in Africa

I already know where one pair ended up!   Right this very moment a little girl affected by HIV/AIDS here in Orange County is wearing them!  Because of our relationship with the AIDS Services Foundation, when a social worker heard of the need for shoes and put the word out, Ty Rose at ASF knew of our collection of shoes and called on Fairview to the rescue!  How wonderful that we have such a strong network where we are able to really serve our community!  This is how a church becomes a real COMMUNITY church that is truly responsive to the needs of others.  Great work Fairview- we are contributing members of the Global Community that is God’s Creation!

I also can’t help but think about the wonderful women’s group last Tuesday night.  I’m so sorry if you missed out on this –but it was fabulous!  Our own Rev. Dr. Joyce Smith shared with the women of Fairview about Hospice Ministry.  We’ll always claim Joyce as ours since she served as Fairview ’s associate minister for several years –but for over 12 years now she has been a chaplain with hospice giving of herself as she helps offer dignity, love and support to those who are dying and care to their families.  We are so grateful for Joyce and chaplains like her, and all involved in hospice care –they’re gift of palliative care, love and support is quite an impacting gift that anyone who has ever lost a loved one can affirm.

Myrna Pappas has volunteered to head up the reception at the American Baptist Biennial in Pasadena on June 26th –but we’ll need some shiny happy people to represent Fairview as we welcome our sister churches in the Evergreen Association to the reception.  If you cannot attend the evening reception please consider giving goodies to the church –like yummy brownies or cookies or some other delightful treat we can share with our friends.  Please contact Myrna if you are able to help in any way:  MPappas@girlscoutsla.org   This is a real honor to have the Biennial so close to our church –it really will be important for us to have a good number of folks present to welcome our Baptist family to our side of the world!

This Sunday we are celebrating our graduates!  Carrie Lester is graduating from UCI, Alicia Eastman graduates from Costa Mesa High School and Kristina Notrica is graduating from Hunting Beach High School .   Hope you’ll come out to congratulate them and wish them well on their next steps!

Don’t forget to scroll down to read the announcements –you won’t want to miss out on watching the film CRASH here at the church this Saturday night at 7pm.

The Wide, Wide World of Theology!

A Prayer for Graduates and All Along the Journey!

God holds for you an unknown future as a gift today;
You cannot see the longed-for goal, the windings of the way.
But you can take the "yet-to-be" and find a blessing there.
And, for God’s sake, out of the blessing, make your life more fair.
Then life shall grow more strong for work, more faithful to the Light.
And you shall  know God ' s gift was beautiful --- God ' s way was right.

Please take a moment to read through the prayers of our community,
