Happy New Year!

Wasn’t our Christmas celebration wonderful?   I thought everything was just perfect!  The music was beautiful, the scripture was ancient and true, the candles burned with the intensity of the night, and the people made the whole experience real!   I love Christmas at Fairview!

If you missed Sunday –you missed out!   We played the CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE which included two different games one was to decipher the names of Christmas carols based on their Wayne like description.  What song would Wayne be referring to if he said, “Embellish the Corridors”?   The correct answer is “ Deck the Halls” –very good!  The other game, “Know your Nativity” aka “Stump the Music Director” involved CAROLS ON DEMAND!   However –you had to play for your carol –If you got the question correct, we sang your song –if not…well you know what happens when you answer incorrectly….  (in this case, we sing your song!)   Some of Sunday morning’s challengers were: Fran Sorrensen who played for “Go Tell it on the Mountain” Darby Lester who couldn’t get enough of “Silent Night” and Pete Soto who played for “Joy to the World”   Fun was had by all!
So –your CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE is to keep the Christ candle burning in your heart all year long!   And if you do –we’ll play the Christmas Challenge next year on the First Sunday of Christmas!

So, today is the last day of 2009.  If you’re anything like me, all of your favorite charities and non-profits are flooding your emails and your mailbox at home and maybe even making phone pitches for last minute donations.  I heard on NPR that Rick Warren is challenging is 22,000 member congregation to give a million dollars today to keep the church out of the red.  As we know, everybody has been hit hard by the economy, but non-profits and churches are often the hardest hit, as people cinch their belts and decide what they can and can’t give to.  We are no different.  Our giving is down.  Our pledges are down and our plate offering is too.  I doubt that you’ll give more this year (there’s only a couple more hours left), but please consider how you can give to your church.  Perhaps you are a creative fundraiser –if so –let’s try some fundraisers together!   How can we think out of the box to keep our church out of the red?

As we enter into this new year of new beginnings and say goodbye to 2009 I hope you will be reflective about where you’ve been and intentional about where you are going.

Have a safe and happy celebration!  And I’ll see you next year!

The Wide, Wide World of Theology!
New Year's Prayer
As the dawn breaks on a new year, let us give thanks for all we hold dear: our health, our family and our friends.

Let us release our grudges, our anger and our pains, for these are nothing but binding chains. Let us live each day in the most loving ways, the God-conscious way. Let us serve all who are in need, regardless of race, color or creed.

Let us keep God of our own understanding in our hearts and to chant God's name each day. Let us lead the world from darkness to light, from falsehood to truth and from wrong to right.

Let us remember that we are all one, embracing all, discriminating against none.

May your year be filled with peace, prosperity and love. May God's blessings shower upon you and bestow upon each of you a bright, healthy and peaceful new year.
Reverend Marcy "Melchezedek Order"
