Thursday's Thoughts 11/06/08

Wow, what a ride! I feel as though I’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster these past few weeks.  Much of the world is witnessing the historical significance of what it means to elect the first black president.  As an advocate for civil rights, I cannot help but recognize the profound moment we’re living in, and I believe this is a time when all of America, regardless of party affiliation, rejoices in the progress our nation has made since its inception and especially in the last 45 years.   Of course, you know that I, as a Christian pastor, and we, as an Open, Welcoming, and Affirming Church that supports equal marriage for all people regardless of orientation, lost ground in another civil rights arena.  I am heartbroken –the pain pierces deeply.  As your pastor, I have been so honored and privileged to be a part of this movement for equality here in CA and right here in our own church.  Over the past several months four couples in our congregation were married and I’ve performed over a dozen same gendered weddings for those outside of our congregation –each of those a reflection of love and commitment and all of them were weddings that were long over due.

Dear Friends,

Last week I wrote about running with Jesus, this week I think I’m just crawling!   I have to share with you some upsetting news.  I am so sad to say that our new Minister of Christian Education, Susan Reed, has decided that ministry is not for her, and she has resigned immediately from our church.  This is certainly shocking news –it took me by surprise –and honestly knocked the wind out of me.  I’m sure you are probably reacting the same way.

Thursday's Thoughts 10/23/08

Hello Fairview!
I’m finally home from the travels of this month –and I’m exhausted.  When I wasn’t in another state at a conference or meeting, I was racing around here trying to get things done!  And now that I’m home I feel like I’m playing catch up.  I’m sure you can relate to this feeling!  Last night, after giving my students their midterm, a friend of mine read me a devotional prayer.  Now, I’m not always the best at devotional time, I have to admit –I often consider my life an act of devotion.  However, the prayer he read resonated with me “I’m running Jesus..”    I realized how often I am running.  Even as I write I’m running late for another commitment.  “I’m running, Jesus…I’m running.  Are you running with me?”

Hello Fairview!  I feel as though I’ve been somewhere in between here and there for the last couple of weeks.  As you can imagine my entire week leads up to Sunday morning service, and everything else sort of rotates around this central point.  However, the first week of October we were in the mountains worshipping among the trees, and last week I was in Seattle worshipping with one of our American Baptist sister churches up north.  And this weekend I’ll be off to Wisconsin to head to Green Lake where I will be at a conference learning more about American Baptist Life!  This crazy schedule has completely thrown me off!

Hi There Fairview!

This is going to be a quick Thursday’s Thoughts as I’m flying to Seattle today to attend our annual Evergreen Association Regional meeting.   I will be representing Fairview at this meeting, voting on the business of the church, and fellowshipping with our fellow Baptist sisters and brothers up north!

Thursday's Thoughts 10/2/08

Hello Friends,
Well, Rally Day was incredible!  Didn’t I tell you it would be?  When was the last time you went to church and built a sandcastle?  Yeah…I thought so… uh…never?    We build sandcastles, painted, played with worms, sang a lot and even played along with the band –it was FUN!   There was dancing in the aisles and lots of laughter!  What a day!   Our children led us on an adventure of discovery as we worshiped with wonder.  We colored our prayers and opened our hearts to open ourselves to God’s realm. For Jesus says we must enter as a child in order to enter into the kingdom of God at all.  I’d say we were living in God’s realm on Sunday….and what a heavenly experience it was!  I hope you had as much fun as I did.   Check out the photos below.

There Friends!

I have to tell you that I’m still a little high from last Sunday’s service!  When people are connected in Spirit –amazing things can happen.   The whole energy of worship last week was just incredible.  Have you noticed that our music just keeps getting better?  I have.  I loved the way Sean and I were in the Spirit together as we merged sermon and song into one experience – and all focused on our theme of Teaching Our Children Well.   Since last week’s sermon was entitled just that –this week’s experience is entitled “Teach Your Parents Well” –and have we got a worship service planned for you!

Thursday's Thought 09/18/08

Hi Fairview Family,

If you were at church this past Sunday, you witnessed something quite out of the ordinary for us.  While I have often thought that the day might come when we’d have protestors outside of our church, I was flabbergasted and quite honestly hurt by the picketers who joined us this past Sunday.  If you weren’t in church….well you missed some excitement, but I’d say, consider yourself lucky.  This occasion does, however, offer us a teaching moment.
